PORT DICKSON: A group of seven siblings is now forced to live with the pain of losing loved ones to COVID-19 after it claimed the lives of their parents, leaving the eldest child, Muhammad Haidir Rodzi, to take care of his brothers and sisters.
The siblings are aged between 23 to 7-years-old, with the youngest child Muhammad Khierzamani Rodzi, now in his first year of primary school.
According to Haidir’s interview with Bernama, he did not expect the recent video call he had with his mother to be the last.
“All she told me was to take good care of my siblings.”
The terrifying reality of COVID first gripped the family when Haidir’s father, Rodzir Tahar, 55, was admitted to Hospital Tampin on May 29 after developing a fever.
His chances of survival were slim as he had pre-existing conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and kidney disease and later succumbed to the virus at around 4.30 am on May 31.
“The saddest thing was that my father didn’t have the chance to say his last words to us,” said Haidir.
As for his mother, she tested positive for COVID after showing symptoms upon coming in close contact with an infected person.
“We kept praying to God for Him to bless our family and keep our mother alive.”
Unfortunately, she did not survive and passed away at the Tunku Jaafar Hospital at Seremban after six days of treatment.
Haidir added that his younger siblings tested positive for the virus and are now under home quarantine. Fortunately, they did not exhibit any severe symptoms.
“Until now, we still don’t know how our parents contracted the virus.”
With the pain of losing both parents still fresh on his mind, Haidir urged the public to always abide by the government’s SOPs and not underestimate the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has claimed countless lives.
