No matter what festive occasion, major brands would put their imagination to work and create commercials that send Malaysians tearing up or roaring with laughter – and the same goes for CNY.
With Chinese New Year halfway through, here are 5 creative ads for you to feast your eyes on before we wave goodbye to the festivities!
1. Blissful together with Auntie Anne’s
When it comes to pretzels, Auntie Anne’s is no doubt every Malaysian’s choice of snack whenever they’re at shopping malls.
This time round, Auntie Anne’s has incorporated its iconic pretzel logo into creating the auspicious Chinese character 福 (blessing) – a must-have word during Chinese New Year.
If you’re observant enough, you’ll also realise that its CNY-themed packaging has the “fu”-tastic calligraphy design printed on it when you purchase pretzels throughout CNY!
In a series of Facebook posts, they superimposed their pretzels with the blissful packaging in various parts of Malaysia, seeking to spread blessings throughout the country.
2. McDonald’s “Golden” burger
McDonald’s has always been known for cooking out its classic Prosperity Burger every CNY, resulting in long queue lines at its outlets.
This year, they’re featuring the burger in a shiny, golden wrapping as part of its “Capture The Golden Prosperity” contest.
Think it’s too good to be true? This “golden” campaign actually contains cash prizes to be won by eligible contestants!
3. Vivo’s “The Nostalgia”
Vivo Malaysia recently produced short comedy clip with a heartwarming ending as part of its 2022 CNY campaign.
In the video, the granddaughter takes multiple selfies, only to have her grandmother “photobombing” every one of them.
It then concludes with the granddaughter flipping through her grandmother’s childhood images and her looking back into the past with a sense of nostalgia.
4. Lotus’s genius homophonic idea for CNY
In 2019, Lotus’s, previously known as Tesco, had a catchy CNY slogan “Ong Mali” that made a deep impression in every Malaysian’s hearts.
This year, the supermarket once again put its creative juices to good use by naming its 2022 CNY campaign “Hari-Harimau Ong”.
This slogan perfectly fits the Year of the Tiger as the Malay word for tiger is harimau and is also full of auspicious vibes as it literally means “wanting good fortune and luck everyday” in Malay and Hokkien.
5. Watsons Malaysia’s #WatsonsGrandestHBY
Watsons is undoubtedly the king of CNY ads as they often have an impressive lineup of local influencers and celebrities being featured in it.
They continued to flex their ad game with its kung-fu themed CNY ad where it has garnered more than 11 million views on Facebook alone. Not only were the characters funny, but the ending theme is super addictive and guaranteed to stick in your brain for days!
