China Man Earning Up To RM17K Monthly As Gamer Gets Pressured By Mom To Get A ‘Real Job’

He’s under pressure to get an office job.
A man in Shanghai has gone viral after revealing that he earns up to RM17,600 (30,000 yuan) a month as a full-time gamer booster, but still faces pressure from his mother to get a “proper” office job.

Earns up to RM17,600

Posting anonymously via his Weibo account, he shared that since March, he has been making a living by helping other players level up in games—a job that pays significantly more than conventional employment.

He earns between RM5,900 to RM17,600 (10,000–30,000 yuan) per month, depending on demand.

With my qualifications, a normal job would only pay me around RM3,540 (6,000 yuan) after deducting insurance and housing funds. In an expensive city like Shanghai, there’d be nothing left for entertainment.”

Despite his strong income, his mother reportedly disapproves of his career path and insists that he find a “normal” job at a company.

Torn between stability and passion

He even shared a snippet of an argument he had with his mother, writing: “We’ve fought over this countless times. I just want to ask—is it so hard to support my career?

“I didn’t even use your money. I built this on my own effort. Why isn’t that valid?”

Although he’s doing well financially, the man admitted he’s unsure how long he can maintain this career since game boosting heavily relies on one’s stamina.

He also occasionally wonders whether he should listen to his mother and pursue a more traditional and stable career path.

Reactions

His post quickly sparked discussion online. Many netizens supported his decision, saying that in today’s fast-changing world, the ability to earn money should be the priority.

‘They were raised with hardship and traditional values. Seeing you at home all day makes them feel uncomfortable. To them, you’re just loafing around. Since you’re earning well from boosting, why not rent a place and live on your own? That way, you’ll have more freedom.’

‘No offense, but I’m genuinely curious—what can you do when you’re 40? Still continue being a game booster?’

‘Continue working as a game booster for a few years first, build up your savings. Once you have some capital, then figure out what suits you. The job your mom introduced to you probably doesn’t require much technical skill and can easily be replaced. Not going isn’t a loss.’
