A warming trend over the years

Reported by Buletin TV3, meteorological data from 1969 to 2024 shows a consistent upward trend in temperature, especially over the past decade.

Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii, revealed that last year’s average temperature was 0.86°C higher than the long-term average recorded between 1991 and 2020, which stood at 18.05°C.

The highest temperature ever recorded in Cameron Highlands was 27.9°C in May 1998, while the lowest was 10.0°C in February 1989,” he stated in the Dewan Rakyat.

Increasing risks of landslides

Rising temperatures are not the only concern. Cameron Highlands has seen a total of 689 landslides from 1961 until now. In response, the Department of Minerals and Geosciences Malaysia (JMG) has been actively monitoring and mitigating these risks.

Through the Slope Hazard and Risk Map (PBRC) Project, authorities have identified 45 high-risk critical slopes in the area.

Additionally, early warning systems have been installed at five locations to provide alerts and improve disaster preparedness.

Managing the risks

Authorities are working closely with various agencies to manage and mitigate the risks associated with these environmental changes.

All geological disaster information, including landslides and critical slopes, has been shared with relevant departments for better management, mitigation, and preparedness,” said the deputy minister.

With temperatures rising and the risk of natural disasters increasing, it remains to be seen how Cameron Highlands will adapt to these challenges.
