A woman sparked debate online after sharing that she only found out her boyfriend did not have an SPM certificate after several months of dating.
In a viral post, she said she had been in a relationship with her boyfriend for almost a year.
According to her, she has a degree and works a corporate job, while her boyfriend works full-time as a ride-hailing driver.
Found out he had no SPM after 5 months
The woman shared that while she knew from the start that he did not continue studying, she initially thought he had stopped after SPM due to health reasons.
However, after about five months together, she found out that he apparently did not have SPM at all.
She admitted that she was shocked by the discovery, especially as conversations about education often made him quiet.

Worried about their future together
The woman said her concerns were not only about his education level.
She claimed that her boyfriend, who is 26, does not have much savings and often struggles financially. She also said she had bought him gifts such as a watch, perfume and even motorcycle tyres because he could not afford them.

Although she wanted to leave the relationship, she said she felt guilty as he had health issues and would sometimes fall sick until he could not work, leaving him without income.
The woman also admitted that part of the reason she stayed was because she found him good-looking, but said her mother kept reminding her to choose someone with a similar education level.
Netizens say SPM not the real issue
Her post drew mixed reactions online, with many netizens saying that not having SPM should not be used to judge someone’s worth.
However, several commenters also pointed out that based on what she shared, the bigger issue seemed to be effort, responsibility and compatibility.
One commenter said that education and job type do not define a person, but love alone is not enough if honesty, effort and compatibility are missing.

Another netizen shared that their father also did not have a certificate, but still worked hard, owned a house and car, and supported the family, proving that effort matters more than education level.
Later asks how to retake SPM
After receiving many comments, the woman later thanked netizens for their responses and said that although she was considering leaving, she still wanted the best for him.
She then asked if anyone knew how her boyfriend could retake SPM, especially for subjects like Bahasa Melayu and History, as the current syllabus is different from before.
The thread has since sparked wider discussion about education, financial stability and whether academic qualifications should matter in relationships.
