Business owners in Kajang are offering a RM1,000 reward for information that could help identify the person allegedly responsible for poisoning around 50 dogs at the Sungai Chua Industrial Centre.
The incident was highlighted by Kajang Municipal Council councillor Kwan Say Hong in a Facebook post.
Around 50 dogs allegedly poisoned
According to Kwan, around 50 dogs have died since early July after consuming food believed to have been mixed with poison.
The animals included stray dogs as well as owned dogs that were being cared for by business operators in the area.
Kwan said he felt angry and saddened after learning about the deaths.
While acknowledging that stray dogs remain a common public safety and cleanliness concern faced by MPKj and other local councils, he stressed that people should not take matters into their own hands.
He added that no reason could justify animal cruelty or actions that break the law.
Business owners offering RM1,000 reward
Kwan later met with business owners, workers, animal welfare groups and representatives from the security company responsible for the industrial area.
During the meeting, they discussed the poisoning incidents and possible ways to control the stray dog population.
They also spoke about encouraging responsible pet ownership and raising awareness among workers and business owners in the area.
The business owners have since lodged reports with the police and the Department of Veterinary Services for further investigation.
They are now offering RM1,000 to anyone who can provide evidence that helps identify the alleged culprit.
Members of the public with CCTV footage, dashcam recordings or other relevant evidence have been urged to come forward.
Offenders could face up to 3 years in prison
Kwan also pointed out that poisoning an animal is an offence under Section 31 of the Animal Welfare Act 2015.
Those convicted can be fined between RM20,000 and RM100,000, jailed for up to three years, or face both penalties.
He said people should use their knowledge and abilities to find humane solutions instead of resorting to animal cruelty.
