Bersatu Sabah ended with a whimper after several leaders unanimously agreed to leave the party, reported Bernama.
However, they will still remain under the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) banner.
‘We’re leaving Bersatu Sabah for unity sake’
In a statement by Bersatu Sabah chief and GRS chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, he said the decision was made after considering the current political landscape, notably Sabah’s.
This unanimous decision is in the interest of Sabah, for the sake of unity and to fulfil the rakyat’s wish and aspiration for us to fight and struggle under the auspices of a local party.
“Moving forward, we will form a new local party but in the meantime we will collectively be members of GRS,” he said.
Hajiji added that GRS will give its full support to the unity government of prime minister Anwar Ibrahim as decreed by the Agong.
Cooperation no longer tenable
Hajiji said that the decision made by Bersatu Sabah’s leaders to walk away from Bersatu was due to their belief that the existing cooperation was no longer justifiable.
He explained that it was also due to a clash in roles between Bersatu and GRS, where the former is the Opposition at the federal level whereas the latter has aligned itself to Anwar.
“Sabah wants political stability and unity. We want to ensure momentum in Sabah’s growth and development and to see that Sabah prospers in accordance with the mandate given to us in the last elections (Sabah state polls).
“We are confident that this decision will be good for political unity and stability in Sabah,” he said.
Hajiji also thanked Bersatu and PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin for leading its members during their time at Bersatu Sabah.
