Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced that every cent of royalty earned from his new book will be channelled directly to underprivileged students.

He made the declaration during the launch and book signing ceremony of “Rethinking Ourselves” at Tsutaya Bookstores in Pavilion Bukit Jalil on Sunday (Dec 7).

“Rethinking Ourselves” is currently available in its first edition and priced at RM95.

During his speech, Anwar shared that the book is being published by three major publishers for global distribution.

Reported by The Star, Hurst London will cover the UK, US and Europe, while Penguin will distribute it across Asia. The Hong Kong University Press will handle China and East Asia.

I would get a lot of royalties. I declare that every sen of the royalty from this book will be spent on underprivileged students, and I believe the sum would be quite substantial,” he said.

He added that the pricing was set by the publishers and that his staff will ensure the funds are channelled to students immediately.

Anwar revealed that the book was compiled from his jottings while he was incarcerated at Sungai Buloh Prison.

He said the work is dedicated to his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

The book discusses a range of ideas, including multi racial relationships, postcolonial challenges and the fight against racism and corruption.

He clarified that it is not an autobiography, but a reflection on Malaysia’s current struggles and how the country can regain dignity and composure amid rapidly changing times.

When I grew up, there was no talk of digital transition or energy transitions. I was thinking about how we survive in the face of all these complexities and challenges,” he said.

Hopes to shift mindsets on corruption

Anwar added that he hopes the book can spark conversations about reform, especially among political leaders.

“Political leaders are sometimes the last to think about change or reform, and usually it is only about power. How can there be change? How do we make people understand that corruption is a menace that destroys society?”

He acknowledged that tackling corruption is not easy, pointing out that those involved often hold significant influence.

He also emphasised that while technology can support expertise, it cannot shape a nation’s values.

Not aimed at anyone, Anwar says

When speaking to the media later, Anwar clarified that he was not taking a jab at any specific political figure when he mentioned leaders who are “obsessed with power”.

It is a general remark. It is very difficult to convince people to make a change as change is an imperative,” he said.
