Adham: Healthcare system will collapse if SOPs aren’t followed

It's a challenging time for everyone.

KUALA LUMPUR – The increasing number of COVID-19 cases is threatening to destroy the country’s healthcare system by June 5 if the government did not implement the total movement control order (FMCO), Berita Harian reported.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba said that the country faced its worst record on May 29 when 9,020 cases were recorded in a single day, making it the highest record thus far.

He reiterated that the government had made a difficult decision by announcing a full movement control order (FMCO) to prevent the healthcare system from collapsing.

“We have been planning the COVID-19 contingency plan since the infectious rate or Rt value increased to 1.1 to 1.2 in early May.”

Faced with such figures, the MOH urged the government to implement Movement Control Order (PKP) 3.0 on May 12.

“On May 25, we decided to tighten the MCO with stricter SOPs again as the Rt value according to the case model projections had surpassed 1.2.”

“Even more worrying was when the capacity of hospital services reached the verge of collapse, where the average number of infections in seven days increased to a range of 8,001 to 13,000 cases.”

Adham also admitted that nurses, specialist doctors and medical officers who have specialized skills were placed in the intensive care unit (ICU) and had to bear the tremendous workload three times more than usual.

“The number of beds allocated for COVID-19 cases is 9,753 or 27 per cent of the total number of hospital beds which is 35,621.

The human resource is overwhelmed as a result of admitted pateints occupying all these beds.

Nurses are overburdened with having to care simultaneously for two to three patients in the ICU. “Furthermore, apart from working two consecutive shifts, specialists or medical officers are ‘on call’ (ready to work) once every two days,” he stressed.
