Of Abang Hero & A Greener World

At the same time, however, there has also been an uptick in plastic usage among those who visit Ramadan bazaars, where food is packed into plastic containers that are thrown away after a single use.

In light of this issue, Sunway Group has released a video highlighting the negative impacts of single-use plastics on the environment and educating the public that the single-use plastics can be repurposed into good use such as home decors, which you can watch here:

In the clip, a group of children are seen visiting a Ramadan bazaar and buying food from several stalls, which were stored in plastic containers.

Suddenly, Abang Hero enters the scene by showing them how long it actually takes for plastic products to fully decompose, a whopping 400 years! He also showed them how to transform the plastic containers into Raya decorations, much to the amazement of the children.

One of them later told his parents how they were harming the environment with plastic containers while they were seated at the dinner table. Pleased by his son’s observations, the father then tells him to invite Abang Hero to their home for their Raya open house.

Taking Abang Hero’s advice to heart, the boy decorated his home with lamps made from plastic containers, which deeply impressed his friends and Abang Hero. Towards the end, everyone is seen enjoying a sumptuous Raya feast together.

Initiatives under Sunway Group

In conjunction with Abang Hero’s efforts on saving the world and Sunway’s 50th anniversary, the conglomerate has taken several key initiatives to address the challenges of plastic usage.

The Sunway Centre for Planetary Health based in Sunway City Kuala Lumpur, is addressing the urgent and pressing sustainability challenges of our time.

For instance, sustainability campaigns and Green Living practices are continuously fostered at institutions across Sunway Education Group.

Sunway hotels under Sunway REIT have begun eliminating all single-use plastic for its in-room amenities in phases, replacing selected items with environmentally friendlier options.

Apart from that, Sunway’s malls have also committed themselves to save the earth by reducing plastic usage and making sure at least 30% of its Raya decorations comprise recycled items.
