A boy was left grievously injured after he fell from a height of 1.8 metres while playing with the monkey bar at a playground in Singapore.
As a result of the fall, he had to have his right kidney removed as failing to do would put his life in danger.
Fell from monkey bar
According to Shin Min Daily News, the incident took place at the playground next to Block 443D Bukit Batok West Avenue 8 at around 6pm on June 20.
His father told the Chinese daily that his 9-year-old son Liu Jun Wen (transliteration) was playing with the monkey bar with other kids when he fell down, where his abdomen hit the plastic partition.

Liu’s father added that he noticed his son’s face going pale but couldn’t find any visible injuries on him.
“I told him to take a break but he kept on crying and said his stomach was in pain. He also kept asking for water.”
Later that day, Jun Wen’s mother was washing him up when she saw blood in his urine, prompting her to rush him to the hospital.

At the hospital, doctors realised that Jun Wen was suffering from internal bleeding but couldn’t pinpoint which organ had been affected.
Following a blood transfusion and X-ray, doctors discovered that the boy’s right kidney had ruptured, where a 10cm laceration was found.
At midnight of June 21, doctors removed Jun Wen’s right kidney after an operation that lasted around three to four hours.

Facing mounting medical bills
Jun Wen’s father told Shin Min that while he doesn’t know the final amount of the surgery, he expects it to be tens of thousands of dollars, which will burden him as he’s the sole breadwinner for the family.
However, he added he’s more concerned about his son’s quality of life after the surgery given his young age.
Jun Wen’s mother said the family will monitor their son’s diet and ensure he doesn’t consume too much salty food once he’s discharged from the hospital.

As for the boy, he’s still in the intensive care unit and has to be fed through a tube. Thankfully, he didn’t lose the ability to speak.
Jun Wen’s father also urged other parents to supervise their children whenever they’re out playing at playgrounds.
