A local monk could hardly believe his luck after he was named the winner of Bank Simpanan Nasional’s (BSN) SSP lucky draw event.
This makes him BSN SSP’s fifth millionaire for the year, where one millionaire is announced each month from January to December, with participants having to maintain a minimum savings of RM3,000 for at least 60 days to qualify.
Was a supervisor before being a monk
According to The Sun Malaysia, 73-year-old Chan Chai Siang, who’s based at a temple in Air Itam, worked at several factories in Singapore and Penang, including a stint as a supervisor.
When he reached his 40s, Chan was ordained as a monk and has spent the past 30 years living the monastic life.
When asked whether becoming a millionaire was a blessing from the Buddha, Chan said it was more a matter of karma tied to past life conditions rather than something that can be sought or granted.
Chan also expressed surprise over his win and joked that monks rarely held lucky draws.
Financial plans
Concerning the RM1 million, Chan said he has yet to come up with a plan in utilising the money but intends to use it wisely.
Money is only as useful as the purpose it serves. Use it well, and it brings happiness to yourself and others. That is where its true meaning lies.”
He added that he plans to use the money to support fellow monks and expand his temple, which has been providing medical treatment for those who travel to Penang to seek relief from their illness.
Chan also commented that people nowadays have to be self-reliant due to help not being present during tough times.
“Save for your rainy days. It is hard to rely on your children. In the end, we have to rely on ourselves.”
