Like young children, the elderly are often vulnerable to choking while eating or drinking and thus must be watched for to prevent tragedies from happening.
Sadly, an old woman’s evening snacking session turned out to be a deadly one for her as a rambutan seed caused her to experience difficulties and subsequently led to her untimely death.
72yo M’sian woman chokes to death on a rambutan
According to a report by Kosmo, the victim was a 72-year-old woman who choked to death while having rambutans at her home in Felda Lawin Utara in Gerik, Perak on Sunday (Jul 14).
Gerik district police chief Superintendent Zulkifli Mahmood said police were alerted of the incident by the Lawin Health Clinic at 8:30pm.
He added several police officers immediately went to the clinic for further investigations and found no criminal elements on the victim’s body.
“Based on an interview with the victim’s daughter, she reported that her mother experienced breathing difficulties when brought inside from the veranda around 7pm.
“The victim was then taken to the clinic for an examination, during which the medical team found something lodged in her throat, which turned out to be a rambutan seed,” he said.
Zulkifli added that cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was then administered on the victim but she unfortunately didn’t survive.
An autopsy conducted on the victim’s body at the Forensic Unit of Gerik Hospital later revealed that she died due to breathing difficulties (asphyxia).
The case has since been classified as a sudden death (SDR) and the victim’s body was subsequently handed over to family members for funeral arrangements.
