The Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) results were just released recently, signalling the start of a new chapter for Independent Chinese Secondary Schools (MICSS) Senior 3 students of Class 2021, where they will have to search for the ideal university to further their studies.

However, it’s no easy feat when it comes to choosing a university as there are many factors to consider such as UEC acceptance rate, courses, environment, career development, interest, resources, reputation, ranking, facilities, location, and most importantly, financial status.

1. Taylor’s University

Taylor’s University has always been known to be the top private university in Malaysia, where it ranked #332 on the recent QS World University Rankings 2022, making it the #1 private university in Malaysia and Southeast Asia. 

On top of that, Taylor’s was ranked 16th globally in the Graduate Employment Rate Indicator on the QS Graduate Employability Rankings 2022.

Among its many courses, two of the most highly acclaimed at Taylor’s are Hospitality & Leisure Management and Business & Management Studies where it was ranked 17th on the QS World Rankings by Subject 2021 and top 150 respectively.

As for tuition waiver, UEC students are eligible for a certain amount based on the points** they get: 

5 points = RM12,000/Year

6-9 points = RM10,000/Year

14-17 points = RM6,000/Year

18-20 points = RM4,000/Year

Also, the results of your degree course after enrollment will not affect the waiver amount.

2. HELP University

For more than 30 years, HELP University has been educating and training Malaysians to become future leaders.

Aside from achieving a 5-star rating in eight categories by the QS World University Rating System in 2019 (Teaching, Graduate Employability, Internationalisation, Academic Development, Facilities, Social Responsibility, Inclusiveness, and Programme Strength for our MBA), it also obtained another 5-star rating in May 2020 for its Online Learning.

In 2021, HELP was ranked first in Asia by QS for Outbound Student Exchange Programmes thanks to its wide range of study destinations such as Europe, Asia, and North America.

Eligible UEC students will be able to enjoy a 25% tuition fee waiver for their first year and 20% for their second and third year, provided that the CGPA remains at 3.00 throughout.

3. University of Southampton Malaysia (UoSM)

The University of Southampton Malaysia is a renowned and highly sought-after private university in both Malaysia and the UK. 

Aside from partnering with industry leaders like Dyson, Intel, Apple and the UK Space Agency, UoSM’s strong Career and Employability Service team has also helped many Malaysian students who were transferred to their UK campus secure internships and employment upon graduation.

UoSM also takes great pride in its engineering courses, where its Civil Engineering and Electrical & Electronic Engineering were ranked No.1 on the Guardian University Guide 2022.

At UoSM, there are three types of scholarship offers for UEC students which are determined by the number of A1s they get. 

Those who obtain 5 or more A1s and are interested in Engineering will get a 60% tuition fee waiver for their first year and a 40% waiver in their second year. They will need to maintain good results throughout their degree. However, if they are interested in other programmes, they can enjoy a 60% tuition fee waiver for their first year and a 20% waiver for their second year. 

For those who score 4 A1s, a total of RM30,000 will be discounted off their study fees for Engineering students and RM25,000 for students interested in other programmes.

As for those who obtain 3 A1s, they will get RM13,000 off their study fees for Engineering-related courses and RM10,000 for other courses.

4. Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU)

APU is the first Malaysian university to achieve an overall rating of 5-stars in the latest QS Stars Rating awards on Nov 1, 2021, where it was awarded five stars across all categories in addition to achieving the highest minimum benchmark score by QS STARS.  

As part of its commitment to keeping up with the latest industrial standards, APU is actively working alongside key industry leaders like Microsoft, AWS and SAS.

Some well-renowned courses by APU include engineering degrees accredited by the Board of Engineers Malaysia, Actuarial Studies degrees with worldwide recognition from SOA (US) and maximum exemptions from IFOA (UK) and Accounting & Finance degrees widely recognized by professional accounting bodies such as ACCA, CPA, ICAEW

APU’s UEC scholarship is based upon the UEC points system, whereby those who score 12 points and below from 6 subjects will obtain a 50% tuition waiver, 35% for those who score 13-18 points, and 20% for those who score 19-24 points. As always, eligible candidates are required to maintain their results throughout to benefit from the scholarship.

5. Multimedia University (MMU)

Being the oldest and first-ever full-fledged private research undergraduate-focused university in Malaysia, MMU has been producing prestigious alumni that are highly regarded by employers. 

The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) has also named MMU as a Premier Digital Tech Institution in 2019 as a form of recognition for its continuous expansion and upgrading of its courses and facilities.

MMU was also listed as one of the Top 10 Universities in Malaysia 2021 in the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia Rankings. 

On top of that, THE Subjects Rankings also listed MMU as Top 2 in Computer Science and Top 3 in Engineering & Technology, and Business & Economics among Malaysian private universities.

UEC students with 8As and above will get a 100% waiver, 50% for those with 5-7As, and 25% for those with 3As and above. 

Those with a full waiver will have to main their CGPA at 3.50 while the rest are required to maintain a CGPA of 3.33.

6. University of Nottingham 

Established in 2000, the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) offers world-class teaching led by academicians known to be the best researchers in their respective fields and boasts of a friendly and inclusive campus environment. 

UNMC was also ranked #103 in the world among more than 1000 universities in the QS World University Rankings 2022.

Courses that are named in the 2019 QS World University Rankings by Subject include Pharmacy and Pharmacology, Nursing, Veterinary Science, Education, and English Language & Literature. 

UEC students with 5A’s and above will get a 25% waiver and they will need to maintain good results throughout their studies.

Swinburne University of Technology’s UEC scholarship in divided into four levels: 

Level 1: Students with 1-2As (RM6,000 waiver)

Level 2: Students with 3-4As As (RM8,000 waiver) 

Level 3: Students with 5-6As (RM10,000 waiver) 

Level 4: Students with 7As or more (Full waiver on their first-year tuition fees)

Unlike the other universities listed above, eligible candidates are NOT required to maintain their results in order to enjoy the scholarship.
