Nestled in the heart of Malaysia, Kundasang is a hidden gem that beckons nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike.
With its stunning landscapes and serene ambiance, it’s no wonder why many, including myself, find themselves repeatedly drawn to this quaint town.
Here are the top things to do in Kundasang that make it an irresistible retreat for those who cherish nature’s wonders.
1. Conquering Maragang Hill
For those not quite ready to tackle the mighty Mount Kinabalu, Maragang Hill offers an exhilarating alternative.
The hike to its peak is an adventure in itself, boasting a breathtaking view that will leave you yearning to conquer Mount Kinabalu on your next visit.
I embarked on a sunrise hike, starting at 3am under a sky brimming with stars.
It’s a chilly trek, but the spectacle of the sunrise from the summit is worth every shiver.
Remember, the more hikers you have, the cheaper the guide fees.
And don’t miss the Milky Way season, which the guide recommended catching before September.
2. Idyllic stays with Mount KK views
Kundasang boasts a range of staycation options that offer stunning views of Mount Kinabalu.
I stayed at both The Hill Kinabalu and Crystal Hill R Kundasang.
The Hill Kinabalu provides better facilities at an affordable price, including the option to rent hotpot equipment for just RM20.
My favourite activity there is to get some ingredients from nearby supermarket and do a simple hotpot before the sun goes down in front of the Kundasang view.
On the other hand, Crystal Hill R Kundasang offers unbeatable views from its balconies, perfect for sunrise watching, despite its modest accommodations.
3. The famous tourist spot, Desa Dairy Farm
This popular tourist spot is more than just a picturesque farm. It offers a delightful experience for photography enthusiasts and dairy lovers.
Don’t miss out on trying their fresh yogurt – it’s a creamy delight that encapsulates the essence of Kundasang’s local produce.
4. Embrace nature through camping
While I didn’t camp in Kundasang this time, I had an unforgettable camping experience at Polumpung Melangkap View Camp Site in Kota Belud.
Waking up at 2am for stargazing, enjoying nature while reading, and relishing packed meals made it a true back-to-nature experience.
The cleanliness maintained by the residents, despite the influx of tourists, is commendable, especially the well-kept campsite toilets.
If you enjoy the experience of camping in Kundasang, there are also many spots that numerous netizens have shared online.
5. Quirky cafe hopping
For a unique culinary experience, visit BW Bus Restaurant, a refurbished bus turned café.
While the prices are typical of a café, the food, including their spaghetti and onion rings, is worth trying.
It’s a delightful spot for those who enjoy café hopping with a twist.
And there’s another one called Annoh Coffee that has recently gone viral as the perfect spot to enjoy coffee amidst nature.
I have never visited it before since I’m not a coffee lover, but many tourists have been sharing this spot on social media.
