While we usually spend our schooling days attending classes and catching up with studies, many of us were also encouraged to participate in extra-curriculum activities.
These clubs and societies were where many of us form close friendships.
Furthermore, while the school may have forced us to attend these activities, the interest that sparked was spontaneous. Some even going as far as pursuing a career in them.
Now, let us take a look at five arts and culture clubs your school had:
1. Choir
Does anyone else get goosebumps whenever the choir team performs? It always amazes me how the different voice ranges blend perfectly together in harmony.
The singers are typically separated into four vocal ranges: soprano, alto, tenor and bass. Besides going acapella, pianists may be appointed for accompaniment.
2. Dance
Be it traditional or modern dance, the dance club never fails to impress.
With their extravagant costumes and precise movement, it’s impossible to tear your eyes away from them.
Types of dance range from traditional to ballet to contemporary and many more.
3. School Band
As my personal highlight during Sports Day, I always look forward to seeing them take the field.
Consisting of brass, woodwind and percussion instrument, they never fail to put on a show.
Can you imagine playing an instrument while marching?? This is some next level coordination.
In the absence of western orchestra in schools, the marching band will fill its place. They often participate in the school’s annual performance day.
4. Chinese Orchestra
Hands down one of the most popular clubs in Chinese schools.
This traditional orchestra is an ensemble of old Chinese musical instruments: Erhu, Drums, Pipa, Yang Qin, Cello, Double Bass, etc.
Clad in cheongsam or traditional attire, their performance will leave me in awe!
Seeing them perform gives me a sense of pride. It makes me proud to be part of this culturally rich ethnicity.
5. 24 Festive Drum
Did you know, 24 Seasons Drums’ is a Malaysian art that was invented in 1988? This unique art is widely popular among SMKs and Chinese Independent schools.
Consisting of 24 drums, they represent the cycle of 24 festivals in the lunar calendar. Each drum representing one festival.
