49 Students In Penang Suffer Food Poisoning After Eating Nasi Lemak

All were reported to have recovered and in good health.
Food safety is extremely important and should always be maintained at all times as failing to do so can result in dire health consequences.

A total of 49 students at a primary and secondary school in Penang experienced food poisoning after they ate nasi lemak which was believed to have been the culprit for their symptoms.

According to a statement by State Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi on his Facebook account yesterday (Nov 2), he said the Northeast State Health Office received two reports about the incident from a public hospital.

Based on the investigations made, it was found that it involved students from SJKC Convent Datuk Keramat and SMJKC Convent Datuk Keramat, where both schools shared the same canteen.

A total of 903 students were exposed and out of them, 49 students suffered food poisoning, where 21 cases were from SJKC Convent Datuk Keramat and 28 cases from SMJKC Convent Datuk Keramat.

“The cause is believed to be nasi lemak and is still under investigation,” he said.

Gooi added that three students were admitted to the hospital and discharged on the same day, 14 students received outpatient treatment at private clinics while the remaining 32 who had mild symptoms didn’t seek treatment.

“Inspection of the school cafeteria and the food supplier’s kitchen have been conducted, and the inspection scores came up as satisfactory.

“However, there are some improvements that need to be made by the school cafeteria and the food supplier.

“Students who have been exposed are urged to seek medical treatment if they experience symptoms of food poisoning,” he said.
