41yo M’sian Man Dies While Playing Volleyball

Condolences.
While playing sports is generally viewed to be a healthy habit to cultivate, unfortunately there hasn’t been a shortage of incidents of individuals suddenly slumping to the ground and passing away.

A similar tragedy recently took place at a private college in Kuala Lumpur, where a man considered to still be in his prime collapsed and subsequently died while playing volleyball yesterday (Jul 3).

According to Harian Metro, the 41-year-old victim was engaged in a session of volleyball when he lost consciousness and collapsed to the ground.

Cheras district police chief Assistant Commissioner Ravindar Singh Sarban Singh told the Malay daily that the victim was then rushed to a hospital located in Cheras at 10.12pm.

The hospital’s emergency department received the victim in an unconscious state and he was later pronounced dead.

“Preliminary investigations found no criminal elements related to the victim’s death and the case has been classified as a sudden death report (SDR),” he said.

What to do if someone collapses

Due to the unpredictable nature of someone losing consciousness and collapsing, here are some steps you can take if it occurs:

  • Don’t panic and stay calm
  • Make sure you and the victim are not in danger and try to rouse the victim by shaking their shoulders while shouting ‘Can you hear me?’
  • If there’s no response, tilt the victim’s head to clear his/her airway. Place your face to their cheek or see their chest to ensure that they’re still breathing
  • If the victim’s not breathing, quickly call for emergency help and perform CPR while waiting for help to come
