30yo M’sian Feels ‘Left Behind’ As Peers Are Buying Houses & Cars While He Slaves Away At Work

'I feel like I'm stuck in the same place.'
30 is the age where most would have either bought their first house or car, or have established some form of financial stability.

But for one man, turning 30 has been nothing but torment for him as he felt he had become stagnant in life, while his peers experience the total opposite.

Stuck in square one

In an anonymous post, the man wrote that was turning 30 this year and felt that he was falling behind in life while his peers were miles ahead of him.

“Every time I open Instagram or Facebook, I see a friend posting about collecting the keys to their new condo, while another shows off their brand-new Honda HR-V.

“When the weekend comes, someone uploads stunning photos of their pre-wedding, held overseas, while another is celebrating their baby’s full moon.”

The OP said seeing all these made him reflect on his own life, which he described as nothing short of miserable.

“Every day after work, I get stuck in traffic jams in Cheras, which gets even worse when it rains.

“As I sit in my car and stare at the endless sea of red brake lights, I suddenly feel overwhelmed by this sense of helplessness, sometimes being close to crying,” he wrote.

No hope?

The OP added that he tried improving his life by putting extra hours at work, only to find that he’s left with very little after paying his monthly commitments.

He also lamented over how lonely he was, which was further aggravated by his lack of socialisation as he’s often too tired to do so after coming home from work.

“When I can’t sleep at night, I often wonder if I’m just not good enough and made all the wrong decisions in life. Why does it feel like everyone else has already made it in life while I’m struggling to keep my life together?

People say you should be well-established by 30. But instead, I feel like I’m full of worries at 30.”

The OP added that he has been keeping these grievances to himself as he’s afraid his friends would think he’s jealous of their success if he were to open up to them.

Netizens tried to comfort the OP by telling him not to compare with others and reminding him that whatever’s shared on social media isn’t necessarily reality.

One advised the OP to take a break from social media lest it continues to negatively impact his self-esteem.
