A total of three men found themselves not only returning empty-handed with no gold bars, but also a trip to the police station over a failed heist.
The incident took place at a supermarket in Ampang Jaya on Nov 23 after police were alerted by a member of the public.
Stole gold bar ATM with no gold bars inside
According to a statement by Ampang Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azam bin Ismail, he said a phone call was made to the police regarding three men removing the gold bar ATM machine from a supermarket in Taman Permata, Kuala Lumpur.
The men had also hired a lorry driver to aid them in removing the ATM machine. Unfortunately for them, the machine had no gold bars inside and was completely emptied out beforehand.
However, the ATM getting stolen resulted in an estimated loss of RM60,000.
Between Nov 26 and Dec 1, police arrested three local men aged between 17 and 41 in Kuala Lumpur and Kajang.
Aside from the arrests, they also seized two mobile phones, clothing, and the lorry used in the theft.
One of the suspects was found to have tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamines and had a long rap sheet, where he had 54 previous records and three pending cases related to crime and narcotics.
He’s now currently in police custody over a four-day remand period as police carry out their investigations.
As for the other two suspects, they were released on police bail.
The case is being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft, which carries a jail term of up to seven years or fine or both, upon conviction.
