Monash University Malaysia, Sunway University and Taylor’s University have joined forces to create new opportunities in education, research and student development.
The three institutions officially launched the Triple Alliance on 8 September at the Sunway Square Jeffrey Cheah Performing Arts Centre in Subang Jaya.
The launch was marked by the inaugural Triple Alliance Philharmonic Orchestra, which brought together members of all three university communities in a celebration of collaboration and creativity.
The event was attended by Higher Education Minister YB Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.

Bringing together over 64,500 students
Located near one another in Sunway City, the three universities collectively represent more than 64,500 students and 5,657 staff members.
By combining their expertise, resources and facilities, the alliance aims to create more opportunities for students, researchers and the wider community in Malaysia and across the region.
The collaboration will focus on five main areas:
- Education
- Research
- Shared resources
- Student life
- Community impact
Planned initiatives include collaborative academic programmes, joint grants, industry partnerships and research projects connected to national and regional priorities.
The universities will place particular focus on emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, healthcare and digital innovation.
More opportunities beyond the classroom
The Triple Alliance also plans to give students access to a wider range of experiences across the three campuses.
These may include student mobility programmes, shared facilities, entrepreneurship initiatives and new approaches to lifelong learning.
Students could also benefit from joint leadership programmes, volunteer opportunities, peer support networks and mental health initiatives.
A Governing Council and several thematic working groups will oversee the partnership and ensure its goals are translated into measurable outcomes.
A new model for higher education
Dr Zambry described the Triple Alliance as a new model for higher education that brings together the strengths of different institutions to create a greater impact.
He said the initiative aligns with the Malaysia Higher Education Plan 2026 to 2035, which encourages universities to form collaborative networks and share their expertise, facilities and resources.
Sunway Group Founder and Chairman Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Sir Dr Jeffrey Cheah said the alliance marks an important milestone in his vision of developing Sunway City Kuala Lumpur into a regional centre for quality education and world class research.
He said the close proximity of the three universities creates a strong concentration of talent, ideas and intellectual energy.
“My vision is to create an environment of collaboration, competition and innovation,” he said.
He added that such an ecosystem could help develop the talent Malaysia needs as the country works towards becoming a high income economy and a more learned and progressive society.
Combining their strengths for greater impact
President and Pro Vice Chancellor of Monash University Malaysia, Professor Emeritus Dato’ Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman, said universities have a responsibility to work together when addressing complex challenges faced by society.
She said the alliance could broaden opportunities for students, accelerate research and strengthen engagement with industries, government agencies and communities.
Sunway University President and Vice Chancellor Professor Sibrandes Poppema said the partnership reflects a shared belief that collaboration can amplify the positive impact created by universities.
Meanwhile, Taylor’s University Vice Chancellor and President Professor Barry Winn said meaningful change happens when institutions with different strengths work towards a common purpose.
He added that the alliance would create new opportunities in learning, research and innovation while supporting Malaysia’s goal of becoming a leading centre for education and knowledge creation.
Through the Triple Alliance, the three universities hope to expand opportunities for students and researchers, address shared challenges and contribute to Malaysia’s development and the wider region.
