A family argument in Taiwan has ended in tragedy after a 28-year-old man allegedly attacked his mother at home before later falling from a building.
The incident took place on Saturday evening (May 30) at a residential building on Mingde 2nd Road in Qidu District, Keelung.
Police alerted to family dispute
According to Taiwan’s Central News Agency, police received a report at around 5:34 pm about a family dispute at the residence.
When officers and firefighters arrived at the scene, the man, surnamed Wang, was found seriously injured after reportedly falling from a height.
He was rushed to hospital but was later pronounced dead.
Authorities later entered the home and found his mother, who was in her late 50s, seriously injured.
She was also sent to hospital for emergency treatment but did not survive.
Argument believed to have started over jacket
Taiwanese media reported that the argument may have been triggered by a jacket bought by the mother for Wang’s older brother.
UDN reported that the item was a sun protection jacket worth about NT$200, which is around RM25.
Wang allegedly became upset as he believed his mother was being biased for buying the jacket for his brother and not him.
The report also claimed that Wang was unemployed at the time and had often argued with his mother over daily matters.
Older brother reportedly tried to stop him
According to Yahoo! Taiwan, Wang’s older brother was at home when the argument escalated and allegedly tried to intervene.
However, the situation turned tragic before Wang later went to the rooftop area of the building, where he reportedly fell.
Local police are still investigating the exact sequence of events.
Case handed to prosecutors
Police said the case will be referred to the Keelung District Prosecutors Office for further investigation.
Authorities are expected to further clarify the motive, timeline and circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Police also urged the public to handle family conflicts calmly and to seek help when facing emotional distress or pressure, instead of allowing disputes to escalate.
