In Malaysia, where many languages thrive, Muhamad Rusyafiq Rosli shines brightly. He’s only 27 but can speak six languages fluently: Malay, English, Thai, Mandarin, Arabic, and Tamil.
Jealousy is the main drive to master 6 languages
Muhamad Rusyafiq’s journey into speaking multiple languages started with a feeling we all know: jealousy.
Seeing others effortlessly switch between languages made him want to learn more. So, he set off on a path of learning, which would change his life forever.

“Starting from that feeling of jealousy, a desire to learn other languages arose, and it began in 2017 when I continued my studies at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), where I started attending third language classes.”
Muhamad Rusyafiq worked hard to become fluent in multiple languages. He went to language classes regularly and made the most of every chance to learn, often studying with friends.
His dedication paid off, and he not only became good at speaking but also learned to write in Mandarin, Japanese, Arabic, and Thai, reported Harian Metro.
“There are many international language classes offered on campus, and every semester, I take different classes; I have even learned French and Spanish. However, the foreign languages I am truly proficient in are Mandarin and Thai to the extent that I can go to shops and order in those languages.“
“As for Arabic, because I continued my studies at IIUM, it became a necessity, while Tamil, I’ve been learning for three years, though it’s rarely used in daily conversations, and my proficiency is the lowest. This year, I aim to hone that skill further,” he said
Now, as an English teacher at Segambut Jaya National Secondary School, his language skills help him connect with students from all walks of life.

Multilingual perks: Benefits in daily life
Looking back on his language journey, Muhamad Rusyafiq highlights the many advantages of knowing multiple languages. It’s not just about talking; it helps him understand and relate to people from different backgrounds.
Plus, it gives him the ability to negotiate well, making him effective in different situations.
“These advantages help me to further strengthen relationships with other ethnicities in this country. Additionally, I can understand if someone is criticising or saying something inappropriate in another language.”
Muhamad Rusyafiq also has become a hit on TikTok, where he shows off his language skills. Some might misunderstand his animated gestures while speaking Tamil, but he assures they’re just natural expressions.

“So far, many have responded positively, but there are a few who think I am just showing off and making fun of the Indian community when speaking Tamil because of the head movements I make while speaking.
“In reality, those movements are spontaneous, in sync with the tone while speaking, and only those who have learned Tamil will understand.
All in all, he shares his journey not for fame, but to spread positivity and encourage others to learn languages too.
