A 24-year-old Malaysian woman has sparked discussion online after sharing concerns about her future with her boyfriend, who has been working as a food delivery rider for several years.
She stressed that her issue was not with his job itself, but with what she felt was a lack of career growth, financial stability and initiative.
They met when they were 21
Sharing her situation on Threads, the woman said she met her boyfriend when they were both 21.
At the time, she was pursuing her degree while he was working full time as a food rider after completing his diploma.
Three years later, she is now working a corporate job and paying for her own expenses and commitments, while her boyfriend remains a food rider.
The couple are in a serious relationship, and she said they have discussed marriage before.
She added that her boyfriend had previously applied through the Public Service Commission (SPA) twice to become a police officer, but was unsuccessful.
However, she claimed that she had not seen him seriously pursue another stable job since.
I’m not saying it’s bad to be a full-time rider, but from my point of view, I don’t think the income is stable enough to provide for a family.”
Suggested office or retail work
The woman said she had suggested that he try office or retail work so he could have a more stable income while continuing food delivery part time.
However, she claimed he would often say he would try “later” and preferred the flexibility of working for himself.
She also said she did not see him saving much despite working for several years.
This made her wonder whether they were approaching their future differently.
‘I don’t see the growth’
Despite her concerns, the woman stressed that her boyfriend treats her well.
She said he would pay for their meals, travel long distances to spend time with her and had previously helped take her to job interviews.
He’s the type that would sacrifice all that he has just so that I’m happy.”
Still, she admitted that seeing little change in his career since they first met had started to bother her.
She wondered whether being only 24 meant he simply did not feel the same pressure to plan ahead yet.
Asked others what she should do
The woman eventually turned to netizens for advice, asking whether she should have a serious conversation with him or encourage him to find a more stable job.
One commenter advised her to speak directly with him instead of relying too much on strangers’ opinions, saying that if they wanted a future together, they should approach the issue as a team.
She agreed, saying she planned to have a deeper conversation with him about their future, particularly their finances.
Another commenter said she should also consider whether being career driven was an important trait she wanted in a long term partner.
