Getting your driver’s license is often seen as a big step toward independence.
Whether it’s driving to work, college, or just enjoying the freedom of the road, it’s a milestone many look forward to.
But for some, it’s not as simple as hitting the legal age and signing up for driving lessons. Financial hurdles, packed schedules, and life circumstances can make it tough to tick this box, leaving some to face unwarranted judgment.
That judgment is exactly what one TikToker decided to call out in a now-viral video that’s sparked an important conversation.
With nearly 150,000 views, their post highlights an issue that many people quietly deal with—being judged for not having a license yet.
“Not Everyone Gets the Chance to Start Early”
In the video, the TikToker urged people to think twice before judging someone for not having their license.
“Can we please stop normalising negative views toward those who haven’t gotten their license yet or are still in the process? Everyone goes through different phases in life,” they said.
They pointed out that not everyone has the luxury of time or money to get a license as soon as they turn legal age.
“Just because you have something others don’t, doesn’t mean you can insult or belittle others as you please. Not everyone gets the chance to get their license early. Honestly, it’s so uncool,” they added.
The TikToker went on to list common reasons people might delay getting their license, like financial struggles or time constraints, stressing that it’s unfair to make assumptions about someone’s situation, reported Mstar.
The video struck a chord with viewers, many of whom shared their own experiences in the comment section.
“It’s true. I feel pressured because everyone keeps telling me to get a license. I know it’s important, but give me a break,” one person wrote.
Another chimed in, “People around me are always judging. It’s so sad when they say things like, ‘You’re over 20 and still don’t have a license.’”
For some, money was the biggest barrier. “I also got my license late. People teased me, but what can I do? I didn’t have the money back then,” one netizen explained.
Others shared how it impacted their families. “At 23, I didn’t have a license, so my parents had to drive me around. They always said things like that to me,” another added.
The Reality for Many B40 Families
Several commenters pointed out that the situation is often tougher for those from B40 households.
“Those who get their license early usually have parents who can afford it. For the rest of us, we have to rely on our own funds,” one person said.
“If I had the money, I would’ve gotten my license earlier. Others can because their parents pay for it,” another shared.
