Privacy is a fundamental expectation, especially among family members, making it all the more devastating when that trust is broken.

A recent case highlighted this troubling issue when a 23-year-old man was sentenced to four days in jail and fined RM4,000 for recording and storing obscene videos of his family members, including his grandmother.

The sentencing, which took place in the Magistrate’s Court today, saw the accused admitting guilt to the charges brought before Magistrate Suhaila Shafi’uddin.

This shocking breach of trust has sparked concerns about the misuse of technology within the very spaces meant to offer safety and security.

A Violation That Started at Home

According to court proceedings, the man, who works at an oil palm plantation, secretly recorded explicit videos and images at his family home.

The recordings were made on the night of December 23, raising questions about how such actions could go unnoticed within a household, reported Harian Metro.

The case came to light after the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) flagged a suspicious link associated with the accused.

This critical tip prompted police to take swift action, leading to a raid at the home he shared with his family members.

While they were bathing and changing clothes

During the raid, the police seized the accused’s mobile phone, uncovering explicit videos and images stored on the device.

Upon further questioning, he admitted that the recordings involved his grandmother, aunt, and cousin.

These videos were taken without their knowledge while they were bathing and changing clothes, exposing the extent of the privacy violations.

Charged under Section 292 of the Penal Code, the accused faced up to three years in prison, a fine, or both upon conviction.

The prosecution, led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Farah Wahidah Mohd Sharip, highlighted the seriousness of the crime, while the accused’s defence was managed by Tan Song Yan from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK).
