23yo M’sian Man Falls To His Death, Was Reportedly Facing Stress Due To Failing Durian Business

Chan’s girlfriend told police that he had been visibly troubled over the past three to four days.
A 23-year-old man who had been struggling with losses from his durian business died tragically on Tuesday (Nov 4), prompting renewed calls for the public to seek help when facing financial or emotional distress.

According to Guang Ming Daily, the deceased, identified as Chan Fook Tak, had been operating his own durian stall in recent years after previously working at a fruit shop.

Was visibly troubled

Chan’s girlfriend told police that he had been visibly troubled over the past three to four days. He had repeatedly expressed worry and disappointment about poor business performance at his durian stall, which affected him emotionally.

On Tuesday around noon, the couple had gone for lunch at a restaurant in Kota Laksamana.

However, Chan reportedly had no appetite, packed his food, and drove towards an serviced apartment in Plaza Melaka Raya. Moments later, he was found dead.

Chan’s girlfriend recounted that she had attempted to stop him when she sensed something was wrong, but he pushed her aside and ran off.

She immediately sought help, which led to authorities being alerted at around 12.40pm.

Chan, who was the family’s only son, will be laid to rest next Monday.

Relatives said he had been trying to build his own small business, and the unexpected downturn in sales had taken a heavy emotional toll on him.

Melaka Central police chief Christopher Patit said investigations found no signs of foul play, and the case is currently classified as a sudden-death report pending a full post-mortem at Melaka Hospital.

Police also confirmed that Chan had three prior criminal records, though they did not elaborate on the nature of the cases.
