Two-time Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen has announced his retirement from professional badminton at the age of 32 due to a recurring back injury.
In a statement shared on Instagram, the Danish star revealed that the decision did not come easy, but was necessary after years of battling persistent pain.
No longer able to train and compete at highest level
Axelsen added that he had undergone multiple treatments in an effort to continue his career, including endoscopic surgery, injections, and various rehabilitation methods.
Due to my ongoing back issues, I’m no longer able to train and compete at the level required,” he said.

However, despite trying different approaches over an extended period, he was ultimately advised to prioritise his long-term health.
A decorated career at the top
Over the course of his career, Axelsen established himself as one of badminton’s greatest players, winning nearly every major title in the sport.
His achievements include two Olympic gold medals at Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024, two World Championship titles, and three European Championship victories.
He was also instrumental in helping Denmark secure the Thomas Cup in 2016 and held the world No.1 ranking for a total of 183 weeks.
Reflecting on his journey, Axelsen described badminton as more than just a profession, calling it a central part of his life since he first picked up a racket.
He expressed gratitude to those who supported him throughout his career, including coaches, medical teams, training partners, and rivals.
While stepping away from professional competition, Axelsen hinted that he may still remain involved in badminton in other capacities in the future.
