Residents living near Sungai Duyong in Melaka can breathe a little easier after a crocodile that had reportedly been spotted repeatedly in the area was successfully captured.
According to China Press, Ayer Molek assemblyman Datuk Rahmad Mariman said he had received complaints from villagers about the crocodile frequently appearing along the river, raising concerns among those living nearby.
Trap set up near watergate
Following the complaints, Rahmad worked with officers from the Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia, better known as PERHILITAN, to deal with the situation.
A crocodile trap was set up near the watergate area in Kampung Kandang, Ayer Molek, on the afternoon of Aug 13.
After some waiting, a crocodile eventually entered the trap.
Footage shared by Rahmad on Facebook showed officers pulling the cage onto land before carefully removing the reptile.
Officers worked together to restrain crocodile
Several officers then worked together to restrain and secure the crocodile before moving it to a safe location.
Rahmad later thanked PERHILITAN for its assistance in successfully capturing the animal, saying the operation helped ease the concerns of nearby residents.
Juvenile crocodile measured 2.16m long
According to PERHILITAN director Norzakiah, the crocodile was captured at around 4.20pm that day.
The juvenile crocodile weighed approximately 35kg and measured around 2.16m in length.
Its capture came after villagers had raised concerns over repeated crocodile sightings around the Sungai Duyong area.
