A 16-year-old teen in Teluk Bahang has become an online sensation due to his astounding height of 198cm.
Muhamad Haziq Khairul Annuar, who suffers from Marfan Syndrome, is so tall that his parents have been unable to turn the ceiling fan on for years.
Noticed their son was different
Speaking to New Straits Times, Junaidah Jamil, Haziq’s mother, noticed that he had an unusual height compared to his peers at the age of five.
When they sent their son for a medical checkup last year, they were told that he had Marfan Syndrome, a rare genetic condition that affects connective tissue, which provides support for the body and organs.
The doctor also confirmed that he was at a height of 198cm and he can continue growing even taller before he reaches 21-years-old,” she said.
Although there were some advantages to being tall, Haziq faces several challenges in life as well such as boarding buses, entering cars, or riding motorcycles.
His family even had to place special orders for custom-made clothing and shoes thanks to his height.
Suffers from mild heart problems
Haziq’s extraordinary height first gained traction after Tasek Gelugor MP Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan shared a photo of him posing beside the teen on Facebook.
However, his height has also brought minor heart problems as well due to Marfan Syndrome, where he gets tired and exhausted faster than usual.
Thus, he’s unable to enjoy the sports that he’s interested in such as high jumping or participate in sporting events.
As for Haziq himself, he said that he was given the nickname ‘galah panjang’ (long pole) by his classmates at school and tasked with jobs only tall people could do.
“What I can tell you is that those who are quite tall end up getting ‘special tasks’, such as cleaning parts of the classroom which are closer to the roof,” he joked.
