Teachers and students were left reeling in shock after a Form 4 student suddenly lost consciousness and subsequently died at a cross-country (merentas desa) event today.
According to Harian Metro, the victim was 16-year-old Muhammad Haziq Uzayr Hairuddin, who was taking part in a run at his school in Sungai Petani, Kedah.

The Malay daily reported that prior to the tragedy, the victim was up and about and showed no signs of distress.
However, when he reached the finish line after completing a six-kilometer run, he suddenly collapsed and lost consciousness.

Kuala Muda district police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Azharuddin Wan Ismail said the teacher on duty, along with several students who were members of the Red Crescent Society (PBSM), took the victim to a nearby tent and administered first aid.
Unfortunately, the victim showed no signs of response and was taken to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital (HSAH) by an ambulance, where he passed away while on the way there.
No foul play detected
Wan Azharuddin said based on interviews with the victim’s father, it was revealed that the victim didn’t suffer any pre-existing conditions and was active in sports.

Checks also found that the victim’s father had given written consent for him to participate in the cross-country event.
Preliminary investigations also found no evidence of foul play being involved in the case.
