A total of 15 students were left with injuries after a lorry carrying timber crashed into a school van they were in and caused it to overturn.
Out of the 15 students, three suffered severe injuries as a result of the accident.
According to Kosmo!, the accident occurred when the lorry attempted to avoid hitting a car that suddenly emerged from the junction before crashing into the school van and three other vehicles.
It also reported that the accident took place at a junction in front of the Gua Musang District Police Headquarters (IPD) in Bandar Baru yesterday (Apr 10).
Lorry carrying timber crashes into school van
Gua Musang district police chief, Superintendent Sik Choon Foo told the Malay daily that investigations found the accident was caused by the negligence of a Kia Spectra which emerged from the junction to turn right.
As a result, the lorry crashed into the car before it lost control and swerved into the opposite lane
“The lorry then hit three vehicles, namely a Perodua Myvi, a Honda Civic, and a Nissan Urvan van carrying 15 students and pupils aged between 7 and 17 years old, before skidding for 19 meters and overturning.
“Investigations found the van was transporting students who had just finished school at Sri Wangi 2 National School and Tengku Indra Petra 2 Secondary School here,” he said in a statement.
Students injured by accident
Choon Foo said three students suffered serious injuries, including a 7-year-old girl with a broken collarbone and an 8-year-old girl with a head injury.
A 10-year-old girl suffered a sprained right thigh bone, while the other victims only sustained minor injuries.
As for the 67-year-old driver of the Kia Spectra, he suffered injuries to his mouth and head. All of the victims were later sent to the Gua Musang Hospital for treatment.
The case is now being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving resulting in a road accident.
