There’s a reason why children aren’t allowed to drive a vehicle on their own as it often results in devastating and in some cases, fatal consequences.
A 10-year-old boy in Seremban is now in a world of trouble after he took his parents’ car out for a joyride with another kid and subsequently crashed it in the end.

According to a statement by Seremban district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Hatta Che Din, he said the boy drove his parents’ Toyota Corolla at around 9.30pm yesterday (Sept 4) along with a neighbour who was only aged nine.

“The car was heading from Arowana Impian Apartment towards Taman Arowana Impian when the boy lost control of the vehicle while going around a bend, causing the car to collide with a parked van.
“Due to the crash’s impact, the van subsequently hit a Perodua Kancil parked in front of it,” he said.
Thankfully, none of the boys were hurt in the accident.
Investigating for underaged driving & child neglect
Mohamad Hatta added that police are now probing into the incident under Sections 39(1) and 111 of the Road Transport Act 1987, Rule 10 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959, and Section 31(1) of the Child Act 2001.

Section 39(1) bars those aged below 16 to drive a motor vehicle on the road, while Section 111 involves the offence of allowing one without a driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle, which is applicable to minors driving without a valid license.
As for Rule 10 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959, it lists out the requirements for getting a driving license, including age restrictions.
Meanwhile, Section 31(1) of the Child Act 2001 deals with the duty parents or guardians have in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of their children, including cases where minors are involved in traffic accidents.
Sinar Harian also reported that the boy’s parents have been summoned by police to give a statement on the incident.
