A two-tier pricing mechanism for RON95 fuel is expected to be rolled out this June, where the MyKad will likely play a key role in verifying subsidy eligibility, said Finance Minister II, Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan.

While the exact mechanism has yet to be officially announced, the minister stated that preparations are still underway to ensure a secure and reliable system before implementation.

RON95 to have subsidised and non-subsidised pricing

The upcoming system will differentiate fuel prices based on subsidy eligibility, offering lower rates to qualified individuals while others will pay the market price.

Amir Hamzah said the method would resemble the current usage of MyKad by beneficiaries of the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) programme.

At present, about 700,000 Sara recipients utilise their MyKad to make purchases at approximately 3,500 participating shops and supermarkets nationwide.

This number is set to increase significantly, with the Finance Ministry confirming that 5.4 million recipients will be able to use their MyKad for aid-related purchases beginning April 1.

MyKad system to expand beyond Peninsular Malaysia

Starting this year, MyKad-based aid distribution under the Sara programme will extend to Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan, covering regions previously excluded from the system in 2024.

The programme allows recipients to spend their credits on essential goods such as groceries, personal care items, medicine, and school supplies at registered outlets.

The government anticipates that about 85% of the population will benefit from the targeted fuel subsidy, which is designed to optimise aid distribution and reduce misuse.
