Gym memberships in Kuala Lumpur may soon become more affordable after the government reduced gym operating licence fees by 80%.
The new rate, effective January 2026, will be RM10 per square metre compared to RM50 previously.
Hannah Yeoh says reduction is result of engagement with industry
Federal Territories Minister Hannah Yeoh said the decision was made after engagement sessions with industry players, including the Malaysian Gym Operators Association (PPGM).

She said the reduction aims to support gym operators while encouraging more people to stay active.
Effective January 2026, the gym operating licence fee in Kuala Lumpur will be set at RM10 per square metre compared to RM50 previously, which is an 80% reduction,” she said.
She added that the adjustment was part of efforts to strengthen the urban sports ecosystem and make fitness facilities more accessible.
kl records highest overweight rate in malaysia
Hannah said the move also responds to growing health concerns in urban areas.
According to the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2023, 32.6% of Malaysians aged 18 and above are overweight, equivalent to about 6.86 million people.

She highlighted that the three highest rates were recorded in the Federal Territories:
• Kuala Lumpur – 40.6%
• Putrajaya – 35.5%
• Labuan – 34.8%
These figures show that the burden of public health is more concentrated in metropolitan and federal administrative areas,” she said.
Operators encouraged to offer discounts to public
In line with the fee reduction, Hannah encouraged gym operators to pass the benefits on to the public.
Among the suggestions are offering membership discounts for workout sessions between 6.00–8.00 am and 5.00–7.00 pm to promote exercise outside peak hours and reduce traffic congestion.
Operators are also encouraged to provide special rates for senior citizens to support active and healthy ageing.
She said the step reflects the MADANI Government’s commitment to building a more active, inclusive, and health-supportive urban ecosystem.
