You Can’t Afford It?” – M’sian Woman Questioned For Buying Cheaper Fish For Pet Cat

“Is the fish too expensive?" The woman asks.
Sometimes being judged can be very unpleasant, especially when it comes from people who know nothing about you.

A woman in Malaysia was left confused and slightly offended after being publicly questioned at a supermarket for choosing cheaper packaged fish instead of fresh fish sold by weight.

“Is the fish too expensive?”

According to mStar, the incident occurred when the woman decided to put back a plastic bag of fresh fish and instead opted for pre-packed trays of fish.

That simple decision apparently prompted a stranger to question her in front of others.

The woman asked me why I put the fish back. She then asked, ‘Is it because the fish is too expensive, or you just can’t afford it?’” the woman shared in a post on social media.

She calmly responded that the fish was not for her, but for her pet cat.

“At first, I didn’t notice the pre-packaged trays. I only saw the ones sold by weight. But when I saw the trays, I figured they were more suitable — again, it’s for my cat, not for me,” she explained.

In the end, she purchased three trays of packaged fish for her cat.

Mixed Reactions Online

The post quickly gained traction online, with netizens weighing in on the incident.

“I once posted about buying vegetables packed at RM2–RM3. Someone commented that it’s not good to eat those kinds of vegetables, saying they’re not fresh. I also often buy grapes that fall off the stems for RM5 — they said it’s not fresh either. But the truth is, the stuff is still good. Besides, we cook it right after we get home. It’s not like we’re keeping it in the fridge for a week before using it 😂 That’s how it is when you cook at home… what do they know.”

At Segi supermarket, I often buy the RM5 tray-packed fish… I always buy it. One time, the cashier asked, “Sis, are you sure you’re okay with this fish?” — because the fish looked a bit… errr 😬😬😬. I told her it’s for my cat. I even buy chicken for my backyard dog and cats. Maybe she thought I was going to eat the tray fish myself? 😅😅

“I’ve experienced something similar. I went to the market and saw an uncle picking up some chicken. After he put it back, I picked up some chicken feet — and he had the nerve to say, “This is the kind of stuff people throw out at my house,” while laughing. I was so angry, felt like exploding. Is eating chicken feet that shameful? I put the regular chicken back because the supermarket didn’t cut it, so I decided to just buy pre-cut ones from Aceh shop. I took the chicken feet because my mom used to say they make good soup. Felt a bit sad too — like it’s shameful to buy chicken feet.”
