You Can Now Claim RM2K Off A New PROTON & Skip Road Tax For 1 Year, Even If Your Old Car ISN’T A PROTON, Here’s How

Ensure your application is submitted before 31 December 2025 to qualify.
If your old car has seen better days, now might be the perfect time to part ways with it, and get rewarded for doing so.

To support safer roads and greener transportation, the Malaysian government, in collaboration with PROTON and Car Medic Sdn Bhd, has introduced the PROTON Xchange Program, reported Berita Harian.

This initiative gives vehicle owners the chance to trade in their old, unsafe vehicles and enjoy a one-year road tax exemption, along with RM2,000 in trade-in support from PROTON.

What Is the PROTON Xchange Program?

First things first, what exactly is this about?

The PROTON Xchange Program is a vehicle scrappage initiative launched to reduce the number of aging, potentially dangerous vehicles on Malaysian roads. It also aligns with national efforts to promote the use of cleaner and greener cars, including electric vehicles (EVs) like the new Proton e.MAS 7.

Backed by the Ministry of Transport, the program is operated by Car Medic Sdn Bhd, a certified Approved Automotive Treatment Facility (AATF). Unlike typical trade-in programs, this one is open to all brands, not just PROTON vehicles.

What do you get?

Now, let’s talk benefits because that’s what makes this program stand out.

Participants who successfully join the program will receive:

  • 1-Year Road Tax Exemption: This applies no matter what new PROTON model you choose, even those with higher tax brackets.
  • RM2,000 Trade-In Support: On top of any existing promotions, this amount is offered by PROTON for every eligible new vehicle registered.
  • Unlimited Participation: There is no cap. If you own more than one qualifying vehicle, you can trade in each one and receive the benefits accordingly.

These incentives are designed not only to ease the cost of buying a new car but also to make the switch from older models more attractive.

Who can take part?

So, who’s eligible?

The program is open to all vehicle owners, regardless of brand. However, to qualify:

  • Your vehicle must be 15 years old or older.
  • It must be deemed unsafe for road use.
  • Eligible vehicle types include sedans, MPVs, vans, 4x4s, lorries, and buses.

What do you need to prepare?

Before you rush to sign up, you’ll need a few important documents. Based on what’s outlined in the program, make sure to have:

  1. Vehicle Ownership Certificate (VOC) – proof that the old vehicle belongs to you.
  2. JPJK1KD form – to register your new PROTON vehicle.
  3. Certificate of Destruction (COD) – issued by Car Medic once your old vehicle has been scrapped.
  4. Confirmation of deregistration – to show your old vehicle has been removed from the JPJ system.

These documents are essential to claim the incentives and confirm your participation in the program.

How does it work?

While a full official step-by-step guide hasn’t been publicly released, the Ministry has explained the key flow of the program. Here’s a simplified version of how the process will likely go:

  1. Check Your Vehicle
Make sure it’s 15 years or older and no longer roadworthy.
  2. Visit Car Medic Sdn Bhd
They’ll handle the evaluation and scrapping of your old car.
  3. Submit Proof to JPJ
With the JPJK1KD form and your VOC, apply to deregister your old vehicle.
  4. Get a Certificate of Destruction
This will be given by Car Medic after the vehicle is officially scrapped.
  5. Register Your New PROTON
Choose your new ride, including models like the Proton e.MAS 7, and complete your registration before the end of the year to qualify.

When should you do it?

The campaign is running until the end of 2025, but for the RM2,000 trade-in support and road tax exemption, your new vehicle must be registered within this year.

So if you’re planning to join, it’s best not to wait too long, especially if you want to avoid last-minute processing delays.
