The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) has reminded all drone operators to obtain a permit before conducting any flights, regardless of risk level.
This requirement applies to drones with cameras flying below 400ft for activities such as wedding filming, corporate videos, and recreation.

A CAAM spokesperson clarified that permits for drones under 20kg cost RM250.
According to FMT, the reminder follows a recent safety directive from CAAM CEO Norazman Mahmud, warning that operating without permits violates Malaysian civil aviation regulations and carries penalties.
Must submit at least 14 days in advance
In 2024, CAAM found that several unmanned aircraft operations, especially training sessions, were conducted without the necessary approvals.

Norazman stressed that all remote pilot training organisations must obtain an Authorisation To Fly (ATF) permit before conducting any training activities.
He assured that CAAM will assist UAS operators and remote pilots through the online application process, providing clear guidance for compliance with safety regulations.
According to CAAM, applications must be submitted at least 14 days in advance to ensure timely processing.
Applications submitted in less than 14 working days will be rejected and incomplete applications will not be processed.
Additionally, drones are regulated by SIRIM for safety and quality standards, while the survey and mapping department issues permits for aerial photography and mapping.
ATF permit applications should be sent to the following email addresses:
