Every now and then, the never-ending debate of which country is better when it comes to Singapore and Malaysia will pop up and trigger an intense argument online.
A Singaporean writer recently ruffled some feathers with his bold claim that his home country was miles ahead of Malaysia in every aspect, such as food, culture, and English proficiency.
Writer claims SG has better English and food than M’sia
It all began with an X (formerly Twitter) post by a foreign tourist, who praised Malaysia for the following:
- Having a better level of English proficiency than most Asian countries
- Not cheating tourists of their money
- Being a super safe place for tourists
- Having a strong family culture by having “kids and parks everywhere”
- Great food
- Cheap and accessible healthcare

However, this didn’t seem to sit well with a Singaporean writer named Cheah Kit Sun, who responded with a post of his own by writing:
Ahem. Singapore has better English. Singapore has virtually no corruption. Singapore does not rip off tourists. Singapore has parks everywhere. Singapore is renowned for its food. Everything Malaysia has, Singapore does better…except prices. And, arguably, families.”
For the uninitiated, Cheah is a science fiction and fantasy writer who was Singapore’s first Hugo and Dragon Award nominee.

But, he also had his share of controversy when he was issued a Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act (POFMA) correction directions from the Singaporean government for allegedly spreading lies about the Covid-19 vaccine.
M’sians bite back
Needless to say, Malaysians were annoyed by the condescending tone in Cheah’s post and bashed him for talking down on others just to elevate his home country.
‘Blowing other people’s candle doesn’t make yours any brighter. Maybe that’s something your Singapore’s education forgot to teach.’

‘Singapore food lmao. Not wrong. Singapore does not rip off tourist, but singaporeans do rip off subsidized petrol from their kind neighbour.’

‘Singapore is not Malaysia, neither is Malaysia, Singapore. She is not better or worse. Calm your defensive tits down. Malaysians have mountains to climb, whereas Singaporeans have ‘none’. Welcome to Mount Kinabalu.’
