There’s a saying that goes, “There’s no ‘I’ in teamwork”, but for a 30-year-old man, he’s feeling the exact opposite.
In a lengthy anonymous post shared on XUAN’s Facebook page, he vented his frustrations over how his older colleagues constantly piled work on him due to his age.
Personality taken advantage of?
The OP started off by describing himself as one who loved talking to others and had been with the company for six years, where he climbed the ranks from being regular order clerk to a purchasing officer.
However, he noticed that due to his easygoing personality, his older colleagues began assigning tasks that were outside of his job scope to him.
“At the beginning, they said I was new and the youngest, so they asked me to handle many trivial tasks. Since I respected my older colleagues and the tasks were small matters, I didn’t argue about it.
“Later, a 40-year-old newbie joined the company and I was hoping he would share some of the workload with me. However, my older colleagues insisted that I do those tasks, including those they could do themselves,” he wrote.
‘Being the youngest not an excuse!’
Unsurprisingly, this didn’t sit well with the OP and the excessive workload began to take a toll on his once cheerful personality.
“I’ve started to not want to talk, communicate, or interact with my older colleagues unless it’s necessary, but they think I’m throwing a hissy fit.
Even when I tell them that me being the youngest isn’t an excuse to make me do everything, they would respond with: ‘We let you do it because we trust you.’
“They keep emphasising on teamwork, but in reality, most of the work still ends up falling on my shoulders,” he ranted.
The OP added that this conundrum has left him doubting himself and whether he was the root of the problem.
He added that he’s aware it’s high time that he changed jobs, but also wants to know if he was the problem so that he can improve himself before moving on to a new workplace.
