A woman in the Philippines was shocked to discover her former elementary school principal living alone and collecting cardboard on the streets to make ends meet.
In a video shared on TikTok, the woman recounted how she encountered the 81-year-old former educator by chance and was moved to learn that she now survives solely by recycling paper.

Once respected, now surviving alone
According to the TikTok post, the elderly woman, Dr Elvira R Barcelo, once served as principal of Mariano San Juan Elementary School in Laguna, Philippines, where she was remembered fondly for her selfless dedication, wisdom, and compassion toward her students.
Despite her age, she continues to collect recyclable materials daily, choosing to maintain her independence and live with dignity.
Living without family support
It was reported that all her immediate family members have passed away.
Although she had previously adopted a child, it’s believed the child suffers from a mental condition. However, this information remains unverified.
The TikTok user emphasised that the former principal never once asked for help, despite her visible need for support.
Not a story of failure, but of strength
In her video, the former student praised the principal’s unyielding spirit and viewed her perseverance as a testament to her dignity and strength.
She was once a school principal, guiding hundreds with wisdom and heart. Today, at 81, she collects cartons— not because she has fallen, but because she refuses to stop moving forward,” she said.
She encouraged anyone who had once studied under the retired educator to come forward and offer assistance.
@clarisse5discountklook If you're one of her former students and wanted to help, please do. Although she's not asking for it, she obviously needs help. Patay na lahat ng kapatid nya. May isa syang ampon which is unfortunately nagkaron daw ng mental health problem but we don't know how true. So she's trying to earn and support herself in a most decent way.
