A woman travelling on a train in France was issued a fine of 110 Euros (approx. RM541) after she failed to keep her pet cat’s meowing under control.
Reactions towards the fine have been mixed, with some supporting the move while others felt it was overly excessive.
Pet cat meows too loudly, woman gets fined
According to a report by China Press, the woman named Camille was on a three-hour train journey from Brittany to Paris with her boyfriend Pierre and pet cat Monet.
During the trip, her pet cat reportedly meowed too loudly, something which the train operator, SNCF, considered to be a “disturbance to public order”.
It was also alleged that Camille was asked to move to a largely empty carriage with Monet after passengers made complaints to the train conductor, but she refused.
As such, SNCF proceeded to issue her the 110 Euro fine for causing noise pollution. It added that the issue wasn’t due to Monet’s meowing, but the disturbance it caused to other passengers.
However, Camille became upset over the fine and argued that her pet cat had a valid 7 Euro (RM34) train ticket and was kept in a pet carrier, adding that she didn’t break any rules.
Mixed reactions
Following the incident, it sparked divided reactions among netizens. A handful of them supported the fine and praised SNCF for maintaining peace and quiet on trains.
However, some felt the punishment didn’t match the offense, adding that SNCF staff was notorious for their inflexibility and excessive strictness.
In response, SNCF reiterated that the fine could have been avoided if the woman had opted for the “simple and common-sense solution” that would have ensured the comfort of all passengers aboard, including the cat.
