KUALA LUMPUR – Following the arrival of the COVID-19 vaccine and rollout in Malaysia, many have fiercely critisised the vaccination rates, questioning why it was moving way behind schedule.
Among them is former prime minister Najib Razak, who said it would be near impossible for the government to achieve herd immunity within the time frame.
In response, Khairy Jamaluddin, the head of the vaccination rollout program, took to TikTok to issue a formal explanation for the slow vaccination rates today.
In the video, he said that there is currently a “lack of supply in vaccines” as the government only managed to procured more doses by the second and third quarter of 2021.
“This period [Q2 and Q3] is when we ramp up our vaccination [programme].”
In a separate TikTok video, Khairy also said that the Ministry of Health (KKM) is currently evaluating the Russian vaccine Sputnik V and firmly believes that it will be approved and arrive in Malaysia soon.
