A public service announcement (PSA) by the Railway Assets Corporation (RAC) has triggered widespread backlash after netizens noticed it was generated using artificial intelligence, complete with a wrongly drawn OKU symbol and distorted visuals.
The video, posted on RAC’s official X account, was meant to highlight the importance of respecting priority seats and accessible facilities for differently-abled passengers.
A PSA encouraging the public to respect OKU spaces
The PSA itself depicts a differently-abled man struggling to stand in a crowded train after an able-bodied passenger occupied a priority seat.
As the train moves, the man drops the groceries he is carrying. Another commuter steps in to help pick them up and politely reminds the person in the priority seat to offer the place to someone who needs it more.
OKU facilities at train stations are reserved for those who really need them. Respect their accessible space for the comfort and safety of all.” RAC captioned the video with a reminder.
RAC, a federal statutory body under the Ministry of Transport (MOT), intended to send a message about courtesy and accessibility.
Ignited frustration
But instead of sparking awareness, it has ignited frustration among Malaysians who questioned why a government-linked agency opted for AI over engaging local artists, actors or production teams.
Many argued that Malaysia’s creative industry is filled with talented illustrators, filmmakers and performers who could have produced a more accurate, respectful and visually coherent PSA.
“We have so many talented people. Our actors are great. But they still want to use AI. Makes no sense. And it looks so animated.”
“Sofyan is willing to go all the way to Singapore and pay just to get quality results. Malaysia? Just uses AI. Useless.”
