A TikTok video has reignited the age-old question: should guests clean up before checking out of a homestay, or is it solely the host’s responsibility?
Posted on TikTok, the video shows a homestay left in disarray after guests departed, accompanied by a caption that reads, “No need to clean up, you’ve paid for it; the host will take care of it later.”
Previous guests left behind a messy house
The video reveals the house in a messy state, indicating that the previous guests did not tidy up before leaving.

It highlights the living room, kitchen, dining area, and bedrooms, showing items scattered and furniture moved out of place.
The clip concludes with the homestay restored to pristine condition, sparking mixed reactions online.

“Everyone has common sense, but it varies from person to person. The worst part is when such behavior repeats, which most hosts can’t tolerate,” the host remarked.
A debate among netizens
The post quickly drew comments from both sides. Some argued that since cleaning fees are included in the rental cost, the responsibility lies with the host.
“Nah. I pay for the cleaning fee, so you should clean it up. Sometimes, the cleaning fee is ridiculously high. 😭✋”

“Cleaning up is the owner’s responsibility since it’s already included in the fee.”

Others believed basic courtesy should apply, pointing out that basic cleanliness should be maintain.
“At the very least, don’t act like monkeys just out of the jungle. It’s too messy. If you don’t have time or can’t wash the dishes and cups, place them neatly in the sink. Trash goes in the bin. Furniture back to its place.”

“I agree. I’ll clean the kitchen and dining table because leaving it like that is disgusting. But for other stuff 😭😭, just pay the cleaners instead of complaining.”

“Ideally, disciplined individuals should tidy up what they’ve used so that the homestay owner doesn’t think it’s been occupied by monkeys.”
