A dramatic scene unfolded in Sibu, Sarawak, after a white Perodua Kenari was caught on video crashing into a motorcyclist and ramming into several cars yesterday (Oct 5).

As chaos unfolded, members of the public managed to corner the driver. This led to a heated confrontation, with bystanders visibly angry over the reckless behaviour.

Adding another twist to the saga, a separate viral clip showed the driver claiming he drove that way because he was being chased by a rider.

Police confirm arrest

Following the incident, police wasted no time in stepping in. Sibu District Police Chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili confirmed that the man behind the wheel was arrested shortly after and taken in for questioning.

Things got more serious after an initial urine test revealed the suspect was positive for amphetamine. This meant that aside from reckless driving, he could also be facing drug-related charges.

According to Zulkipli, the case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. If convicted, the driver could face up to five years’ jail, a fine between RM5,000 and RM15,000, and a minimum two-year licence suspension.

On top of that, the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division is also probing him under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. This carries a punishment of up to RM5,000 fine, two years’ jail, or both.

Driver remanded for 5 days

To allow investigations to proceed, Berita RTM reported that the suspect has been placed under a five-day remand order.

In the meantime, Zulkipli has urged members of the public not to jump to conclusions or spread unverified claims online. Instead, he asked for space to allow the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation.
