Malaysia is a food lover’s paradise, where every meal celebrates diverse flavours and rich cultural traditions. From the spicy kick of Nasi Lemak to the warmth of Hainanese Chicken Rice, its cuisine blends Malay, Chinese, Indian, and more.
One of the absolute best parts of the workday? Without a doubt, it’s the lunch break! We all secretly count down the hours, eagerly waiting for that much-needed pause to recharge and refuel.
In fact, some of us are so excited that we place our food orders well in advance, making sure we don’t waste a single minute when the clock strikes lunchtime.
“Always our go-to”
Recently, we found ourselves in a lunchtime dilemma, scratching our heads, completely unsure of what to order. Then, our colleague Rydah came to the rescue and generously offered to treat us to a hearty meal.

Without hesitation, we all gravitated toward our go-to comfort food—delicious local M’sian cuisine! One of us went for Nasi Lemak, while the rest chose flavourful dishes like Char Kuey Teow, Nasi Goreng, and the classic Mee Goreng Mamak.

As expected, these favorites hit the spot, promising a meal full of bold flavours and comforting warmth.
Our search for the perfect kick!
The food arrived in no time, and we eagerly dove into our meals, ready to satisfy our growling stomachs. Everyone was excited, and for the most part, our colleagues were more than happy with their choices, we thought.

The food looked so tempting, packed with flavours. However, as Rydah and I were not satisfied and we couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing.

While the dishes were good, they didn’t quite have the bold, punchy flavours we were craving. The meal seemed to be needing that extra “kick” we both love.
The wrong suggestions at first
As we sat there, all of us could not stop thinking about what could enhance the flavours of all the dishes we had ordered.
We wanted something that would complement the variety of Nasi Lemak, Char Kuey Teow, Nasi Goreng, and Mee Goreng Mamak on the table—something that would make it tastier.
After a few minutes of brainstorming, Rydah came up with an idea. “Why not order some Fried Tempeh?” he said.

Not on the same page as the rest
However, not everyone was on board. While many enjoy the flavour and crunch of tempeh, there are some who just can’t stand it—especially the texture. And, well, I had to admit, I was one of those picky eaters.
The thought of adding tempeh to my meal didn’t appeal to me, and I declined Rydah’s suggestion.

Jann, another of our colleague suggested Keropok Lekor as an addition to our meals. Our colleague Eisya, then refused as she didn’t like the idea of having Lekor with her Char Kuey Teow.
