Since last week, Hatyai has been hit by torrential rains that have caused unprecedented levels of flooding and left many Malaysians stranded there.
While the disaster has united Malaysians together in the form of rescue efforts being mobilised to save their countrymen calling for help, it has unfortunately also brought out the worst side of Malaysians — littering.
‘I’m ashamed as a M’sian!’
In a 10-minute long video posted by a rescue team volunteer named Mohd Amir Faizal, he lamented about Malaysians’ notorious habit of littering which sadly had reared its ugly head in Hatyai.
At the start of the clip, it showed several women gathering and sweeping up rubbish that had been thrown by Malaysians who were rescued from the floods.

For the next several minutes of the clip, Mohd Amir walks around the area and shows viewers the water bottles, plastic bags, and food containers which were thrown indiscriminately along the road and on top of benches.
Needless to say, the sight left him feeling deeply embarrassed and angry and he didn’t hold back in criticising the litterbugs.
I told them several times to throw the rubbish into rubbish bins but they simply ignored me. As a Malaysian, I’m so ashamed that I don’t know where to put my face!”

He also claimed that he saw several Malaysians hurl their rubbish out from the window of the bus that had come to take them back home.
Old habits die hard?
In the comments, netizens also shared Mohd Amir’s shame and slammed their fellow countrymen for humiliating their country with their littering.

Meanwhile, one netizen suggested a much harsher approach, saying that rescuers shouldn’t bother saving such Malaysians and instead leave them stranded, adding that this would lead to “lesser litterbugs.”
