UTAR, TAR UMT Offers Full Scholarship To 4.0 STPM Scorer

Wong offered scholarship but still questions fairness of UPU system.
Reportedly, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) and Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) have announced that they are ready to offer a full scholarship to Edward Wong.

Wee says it doesn’t solve the real problem

Wong is a top STPM scorer who recently revealed that he was not given a place in Universiti Malaya’s (UM) accountancy course through the Unit Pusat Universiti (UPU) system despite achieving a 4.0 CGPA and 99.9% merit.

MCA president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong said that even though these scholarships are helpful, they do not solve the real issue behind Wong’s rejection, as reported by FMT.

‘Shouldn’t he fight for his rights?’

According to Wee, Wong had a perfect 4.0 CGPA and scored 99.9% in co-curricular achievements.

Wong believed he was qualified to study in one of Malaysia’s top public universities, especially for his first-choice course in accountancy.

Wee shared that Wong feels strongly about his case, saying it is his constitutional right to fight for a place in the country’s best university.

“With results like his, he should be eligible to enter the best university in the country. Why shouldn’t he fight for his rights?” Wee said during a press conference.

UPU process labelled unfair

Wong’s case gained attention when Wee highlighted flaws in the UPU admission system, calling it “unfair” and “flawed” at an earlier press conference.

Wee revealed that Wong was later accepted into the UM accountancy course via open intake, but the tuition fee was RM83,800 which is almost 10 times more than the UPU-subsidised fee of RM8,300.

Education Ministry responds to public outcry

According to FMT, the Ministry of Higher Education later clarified that Wong was ranked 1,129th out of 2,291 applicants for the course.

Only 85 spots were available for the accountancy programme at UM this year, which made the competition intense.

As a result, Wong was offered a place in a bachelor of Management with Honours programme at a leading research university, which was his fifth choice.

Wee hopes that this issue will lead to improvements in the student selection process in the future.
