A young Malaysian girl with top academic results had her dream of becoming a doctor within reach after receiving an offer from Monash University.
But just as her future seemed set, a RM60,000 enrollment fee stood in the way.
With the registration deadline approaching, her family found themselves racing against time to secure the funds.
Father tried everything, still RM40k short
According to a Facebook post by Uncle Kentang, the girl’s father had EPF savings but needed another year before he could withdraw the full amount. In the meantime, he managed to raise RM20,000 through various efforts.
However, they were still RM40,000 short.
With no more options left, the father approached Uncle Kentang for help during what was described as their most desperate moment.
The father is also a member of the Sungai Buloh Hospital Visitor Committee and a Rotarian, and personally explained his daughter’s situation.
Girl records video to appeal for help

To help the public understand the urgency of the situation, Uncle Kentang asked the girl to record a video explaining her circumstances.
She agreed and gathered the courage to speak in front of the camera.
Uncle Kentang later shared that many young people hesitate to reveal their struggles publicly due to fear of online criticism.
He praised the girl for being brave enough to step forward instead of letting her dream quietly slip away.
Long time friend steps in with a friendly loan
Uncle Kentang first sought assistance from a businessman, but the request did not go through. He then reached out to an old friend of 30 years, GS Lau, and explained the case sincerely.
Moved by the situation and their long friendship, GS Lau and his family agreed to approve a friendly loan to help cover the remaining amount.
Uncle Kentang emphasized that worthy cases should be supported regardless of race, and that dreams like this should not be easily abandoned.
A thank you letter and a shared meal

After receiving the help, the girl wrote a heartfelt thank you letter expressing gratitude to those who stepped in during the darkest moment of her life.
She also personally thanked Mr and Mrs GS Lau and their family for believing in her dream.
The group later met for a vegetarian lunch, during which the handover of funds was completed.
Uncle Kentang ended his post by expressing joy at being part of a journey that could shape a future doctor. He also wished the girl success in her studies and in the long road ahead.
For now, what began as a financial roadblock has turned into a story of community, kindness, and a dream kept alive.
